Cisco BGP-4 Command and Configuration Handbook, Mobipocket by William R. Parkhurst - BGP Unveiled

The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is central to communication among the routers that move data from domain to domain. Cisco BGP-4 Command and Configuration Handbook explains how to use all Internetwork Operating System (IOS) commands having to do with BGP-4, documenting the purpose and syntax of each and presenting an example of appropriate use for most. This book is both a fantastic reference--its easy to locate the entry that describes the command that interests you--and an excellent learning tool. Youll want to consult it each time youre presented with an interdomain routing problem, either for the IOS commands you need to implement your ideas or for the authors thoughts about how to engineer your solution.

Coverage of each BGP-4 command goes beyond whats in the IOS documentation. Each entry begins with a syntax summary (in large type, bless the books designers), a concise statement of what the command does, and a note of the IOS version in which the command first appeared. After that, theres a configuration example consisting of input and output listings from the IOS command line and some suggestions (in the form of explicit IOS commands) on how to troubleshoot related problems. Sometimes theres a schematic hockey puck diagram to clarify configurations. This is a valuable reference and--for hardcore IOS fans and Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) candidates--an informative, straight-through read. --David Wall

Topics covered: Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP-4) as configured in Ciscos Internetwork Operating System (IOS). All IOS commands relevant to BGP-4 configuration, and all interesting options, are covered in reference form.

BGP Unveiled
The Cisco BGP-4 Command and Configuration Handbook has become another valuable addition to my networking library. This reference by Dr. William Parkhurst is a comprehensive listing of all BGP-4 commands used in Cisco IOS software. Like his reference on OSPF commands, each BGP command is outlined with a syntax description, a purpose for the command, configuration examples and a short troubleshooting section.

The flow of the book was very logically laid out. It begins with basic BGP route aggregation commands and progresses through neighbor configuration commands, route redistribution and ends with chapters on troubleshooting commands. Each chapter begins with basic commands and builds on those commands as the chapter progresses. This way the reader gets a feeling for how each command interacts with other commands.

As with any other command and configuration handbook, the reader must be well versed in the theory behind the technology. This is especially true with this book. I must admit, that before reading this book, I did not have much exposure to BGP-4, but I found the material very easy to comprehend. It also helped me to understand the protocol better. Without the proper background in BGP-4 you can get lost very easily, however if you have had exposure to BGP then you will find this book very useful in configuring the protocol.

Another aspect of the book I really liked was in how the configuration examples were presented. Each example had a network scenario and gave a step by step process on how to utilize the command. A network diagram was included along with outputs from the routers used in the configuration scenario. The configuration examples start with a verification phase where the correct operation is determined. Then the command is applied and the changes are outlined and displayed. The troubleshooting section outlines steps where the most common failures may occur. While the reader can get a lot of information from just reading the configuration section, it really helps if you can have access to live routers.

I also found the appendices very helpful in understanding some of the book's content. Appendix A presents the concepts and terminology contained in RFC 1771 Border Gateway Protocol 4. Appendix B covers regular expression and Appendix C is about route map logic and how route maps are used in BGP-4. Don't be daunted by Appendix A, the author left out most of the details, like packet format and content and instead focused on BGP attributes, path selection and forming BGP connections. Appendix C gave a good refresher on route maps and how they are utilized in BGP.

This book has become an excellent reference source for my studies toward the CCIE. It also helped me to understand BGP better. I would highly recommend this book to anyone studying for Cisco certification or who has to work with BGP-4 in their network. I looked forward to reading more books by Dr. Parkhurst

Cat on the Edge by Shirley Rousseau Murphy - Great Fantasy/Mystery

Its been quite a week for Joe Grey. First the large, powerfulfeline discovers that, through some strange, inexplicable phenomenon, he now has the ability to understand human language. Then he discovers he can speak it as well! Its a nightmare for a cat whod prefer to sleep the day away carefree, but Joe can handle it. With all of his nine lives suddenly at risk, Joes got no choice but to get to the bottom of the heinous crime -- because his mouse-hunting days are over for good unless he can help bring a killer to justice.

Great Fantasy/Mystery
I've read all these cat books by Shirley Murphy. My husband and daughter got intrigued by them too. They are well written and fun. I can hardly wait for the next book which is coming out early next year. Joe Grey and Dulcie are cats. They help the cops of Molena Point CA to solve mysteries by poking their little selves into places no cop could get into..at least not legally. They can talk...but only a very few people know this. Joe is wise enough to know some people would use him for their own purposes if they knew his talents. I would rate this series 5 stars.

The Whale Warriors: The Battle at the Bottom of the World to Save the Planets Largest Mammals by Peter Heller - Something that matters

For the crew of the eco-pirate ship the Farley Mowat, any day saving a whale is a good day to die. In The Whale Warriors, veteran adventure writer Peter Heller takes us on a hair-raising journey with a vigilante crew on their mission to stop illegal Japanese whaling in the stormy, remote seas off the forbidding shores of Antarctica. The Farley is the flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and captained by its founder, the radical environmental enforcer Paul Watson. The Japanese, who are hunting endangered whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, in violation of several international laws, know he means business: Watson has sunk eight whaling ships to the bottom of the sea.

For two months, Heller was aboard the vegan attack vessel as it stalked the Japanese whaling fleet through the howling gales and treacherous ice off the pristine Antarctic coast. The ship is all black, flies under a Jolly Roger, and is outfitted with a helicopter, fast assault Zodiacs, and a seven-foot blade attached to the bow, called the can opener.

As Watson and his crew see it, the plight of the whales is also about the larger crisis of the oceans and the eleventh hour of life as we know it on Earth. The exploitation of endangered whales is emblematic of a terrible overexploitation of the seas that is now entering its desperate denouement. The oceans may be easy to ignore because they are literally under the surface, but scientists believe that the worlds oceans are on the verge of total ecosystem collapse. Our own survival is in the balance.

With Force 8 gales, monstrous seas, and a crew composed of professional gamblers, Earthfirst! forest activists, champion equestrians, and ex-military, the action never stops. In the ice-choked water a swimmer has minutes to live. The Japanese factory ship is ten times the tonnage of the Farley. The sailors on board both ships know that there will be no rescue in this desolate part of the ocean. Watson presses his enemy while Japan threatens to send down defense aircraft and warships, Australia appeals for calm, New Zealand dispatches military surveillance aircraft, the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence issues a piracy warning, and international media begin to track the developing whale war.

For the Sea Shepherds there is no compromise. If the charismatic, intelligent Great Whales cannot be saved, there is no hope for the rest of the planet. Watson aims his ship like a slow torpedo and gives the order: Tell the crew, collision in two minutes. In 35-foot seas, it is a deadly game of Antarctic chicken in which the stakes cannot be higher.

Something that matters
I echo many of the sentiments already expressed in the reviews here. I feel changed after reading this book. I finished it feeling angry, incredibly sad, frustrated and totally inspired all at once. I return to my day job fixating on how much I'd rather be doing something that actually matters and saving the oceans like these guys. My heart is absolutely out there with the Sea Shepherds. In this messed up world, with the impending threat of a total collapse of life in the oceans, everything else just pales in significance.

Go check out the "Whale Wars" DVD series too. Compelling stuff.

The Pastors Wife by ReShonda Tate Billingsley - "We are all created equal"

The Pastors Wife

Most men barely survive one mother, but Terrance Ellis has three -- his aunts. His grandmother Essies sisters -- Eva, Dorothy Mae, and Mamie -- lovingly raised him after Essie died in a tragic accident. They made sure that troubled young Terrance got on the right path and made something of his life. And now that hes all grown up and the rising pastor of Houstons Lily Grove church, the endlessly argumentative sisters agree on one thing: Terrance needs to find a wife. And not just any wife -- but the right young woman to stand beside him as First Lady of Lily Grove at the fast-approaching one-hundredth-year Christmas service.

Humble and handsome, Terrance is focused on preaching more than dating and has kindly fended off the advances of more than a few perfectly available ladies. So why, of all women, is outrageous, flirtatious Savannah McKinney drawing him in? Seeing Terrance falling under her seductive spell has got his aunts frantically matchmaking since time is running out and gossip is flying. Who will be the pastors wife? Only heaven knows for sure...and before he finds her, some surprising and dramatic revelations are in store for Terrance, his congregation, and the three aunts who love him most in the world.

"We are all created equal"
Yes, even Christians are created equally!!
ReShonda is a great writer; I've enjoyed majority of her work. This book is no different. She takes her time to develop the story and the characters are...well just that - CHARACTERS!

The story is great, no different than protective family members over 'an untouched or clean thing' - they were just 'protecting their nephew (although their methods were drastic)They simply wanted to protect their vested interest (Terrance & the church)Savannah is no different than any other woman who attempts to 'get at' a good brother [using drastic measures; I do believe that she really liked Terrance; despite her past & her conniving ways; (she's simply a product of her upbringing)]

The ending has a twist to it though regarding who Terrance ends up with b/c it just proves that "In life we're always 'searching for the ONE & sometimes 'the one' has been there all alone & knows us better than we know ourselves!"

Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey - In the vein of the Greek Classics

When a gunman named Lassiter and a rich homesteader named Jane Withersteen join forces, no outlaw in the town is safe from their wrath. Reprint.

In the vein of the Greek Classics
Enthralling, with the almighty gun slinger having an inate sense of right and wrong, Riders of the Purple Sage endows the reader with the ideals instilled from the saga of Heracles' (in Roman Hurcules) trials. By not wasting time developing characters when the landscape serves as silent narrator, by allowing the light of Lassiter's justice to meddle into the darkness of a supressed woman, by using the soap-opera quality of irony to sweep the reader along from page to page... Zane Grey dispelled a critique of the LDS church as it was in the 19th century that far surpasses any 20th century writer could hope to achieve.
Lassiter is a ruthless yet pure hearted gunman- his quest for vengeance began out of love, for without love one can never truly feel hate. Jane Withersteen, trapped under her beliefs and confused as to what action she should take, mirrors closely the victimization that cult followers feel when you watch a History Channel documentary- knowing that escape is the only rightful choice, but fearful of the divine punishment to fall upon those excommunicated. It is in the antithesis of her doctrine (on it's surface that is) which ultimately leads to her redemption, and to her final, strong willed, moment's notice decision to allow herself and Lassiter sealed into a valley at the novel's end. It is perhaps the definitive moment of irony when a ruthless gunman condems the soul of a Bishop into a fiery afterlife before pulling the trigger...the simple, uneducated cowboy serving the Christlike role of Savior and Judge, with the man of the cloth no more earnest than the tax collectors that drove Christ into his only fit of rage.
By mixing Rambo-esque action, mystery, and above all entertainment, Zane Grey painted a picture of social criticism that could actually be enjoyed without wasting precious ink on avoiding so-called Literary sins. His landscape is Calvinistic in favoring the elect and damning the damned. Only said "good guys" draw from the descriptive imagery of "Nature's God". And frankly, his super human cowboys are far more believable than the outlandish epic of Beowulf (which is an epic poem I very much like and recommend).
A genuine classic.

The Seagull: A Play in Four Acts by Anton Chekhov - In Chekov this is called comedy

Master Russian story and play writer Chekhov provides an engaging drama.

This edition is formatted for the Kindle.

In Chekov this is called comedy
Oh tormented people. One may read `The Seagull' and wonder what's that all those things about death and killing, and failing love stories. So sad! But in Chekov's world this is a comedy, and it doesn't take too much to get why. It is indeed funny in some parts-- well, not the kind of funny we are used to, but nevertheless, it makes us laugh.

The tragicomic play is of paramount importance in modern teather. Rarely has a playwriter written such a realistic piece analyzing the life of an artist and his/her role in the society. In `The Seagull' Treplieff is a writer wanna be, who is trying to grow over the shadow of her mother --an aging actress--, and to get an actress wanna be to love him. But above all, he has to deal with feeling jelous of Trigorin a youger and successful writer. There aren't many characters, but there is so much going on, personal dilemas, that the story grows to a placeless dimension.

Chekov can write with such a confidence that for not a second you doubt the existence of these people. His words are vivid. More than 100 years later, his play is up to date dealing with issues that are universal and timeless-- that can make you either cry or laugh.

Emergent Design: The Evolutionary Nature of Professional Software Development (Mobipocket) by Scott L. Bain - THE Book to read for developers whose code changes

This is the eBook version of the printed book. If the print book includes a CD-ROM, this content is not included within the eBook version.

For software to consistently deliver promised results, software development must mature into a true profession. Emergent Design points the way. As software continues to evolve and mature, software development processes become more complicated, relying on a variety of methodologies and approaches. This book illuminates the path to building the next generation of software. Author Scott L. Bain integrates the best of today's most important development disciplines into a unified, streamlined, realistic, and fully actionable approach to developing software. Drawing on patterns, refactoring, and test-driven development, Bain offers a blueprint for moving efficiently through the entire software lifecycle, smoothly managing change, and consistently delivering systems that are robust, reliable, and cost-effective.

Reflecting a deep understanding of the natural flow of system development, Emergent Design helps developers work with the flow, instead of against it. Bain introduces the principles and practices of emergent design one step at a time, showing how to promote the natural evolution of software systems over time, making systems work better and provide greater value. To illuminate his approach, Bain presents code examples wherever necessary and concludes with a complete project case study.

This book provides developers, project leads, and testers powerful new ways to collaborate, achieve immediate goals, and build systems that improve in quality with each iteration.

Coverage includes

  • How to design software in a more natural, evolutionary, and professional way
  • How to use the "open-closed" principle to mitigate risks and eliminate waste
  • How and when to test your design throughout the development process
  • How to translate design principles into practices that actually lead to better code
  • How to determine how much design is enough
  • How refactoring can help you reduce over-design and manage change more effectively
The book's companion Web site, www.netobjectives.com/resources, provides updates, links to related materials, and support for discussions of the book's content.

THE Book to read for developers whose code changes
I think of this book as answering three questions:
* what do developers need to know to work as professionals?
* how does quality coding and design play into unfolding designs?
* what is the proper way to integrate refactoring, test-driven development and design patterns in the real world?

All too long this industry has allowed individuals to do what they like instead of what their teams and businesses need. Programming is not just about individual people's opinion of approach and quality, but about real issues that have been long identified.

This book weaves the tale of what is known and how to use it in a real environment. I didn't react to this book the way Mr. Vodde did as an advertisement for Net Objectives. I like the anecdotal story telling of how this knowledge is conveyed to realy people in real situations.

Developers often talk about their problems in getting others convinced of better approaches. What better way than to hear how Mr. Bain has done this himself - something good to learn.

While this book is probably thought of as being for agile developers (those who write code in iterations) it'd be highly useful for anyone. Everybody's code needs to morph over time - even if the first release is done in a classic waterfall.

The Killing Way by Tony Hays - Hard to put down.

It is the time of Arthur, but this is not his storied epic. Arthur is a young and powerful warrior who some would say stands on the brink of legend. Britain's leaders have come to elect a new supreme king, and Arthur is favored. But when a young woman is brutally murdered and the blame is placed at Merlin's feet, Arthur's reputation is at stake and his enemies are poised to strike. Arthur turns to Malgwyn ap Cuneglas, a man whose knowledge of battle and keen insight into how the human mind works has helped Arthur come to the brink of kingship.

Malgwyn is also the man who hates Arthur most in the world.

After the death of Malgwyns wife by Saxon hands, he became Mad Malgwyn, killer of Saxons and right-hand lieutenant to the warrior Arthur. Right hand, that is, until a Saxon cut his sword arm off and left him to die on the battlefield. Arthur rescued him. Now a one-armed scribe and a heavy drinker, Malgwyn rejects the half-life that his liege gave him. But loyalty is sometimes stronger than loathing…and Malgwyn is pulled toward a puzzle that he can't walk away from.

Think CSI: Medieval: gritty, powerful, and with the true ring of historical perspective and a character who sees more than those around him. The Killing Way is the first in a mystery series that is sure to be a hit with both mystery readers and historical fans alike.

Hard to put down.
It's obvious that Tony has spent a good deal of time researching the times and ensuring that the integration of them are seemless and as acurate as possible. The story has all the key elements of a great mystery keeping you guessing 'till the end. I found myself wanting to skip to the end to see who the "doers of evil" were but resisted. This book is a great read especially for all those Authur Nuts out there......you know who you are. So go and get a copy you won't be dissapointed.

Marine One by James Huston - Huston's Best Thriller Yet

The president rushes across the South Lawn through a pounding thunderstorm to Marine One to fly to Camp David late at night. His advisers plead with him not to fly, but he insists. He has arranged a meeting that only three people in his administration know about. After fighting its way through the brutal thunderstorm on the way to Camp David, Marine One crashes into a ravine in Maryland, killing all aboard.

The government blames the European manufacturer of the helicopter and accuses them of killing the president. Senate Investigations and Justice Department accusations multiply as Mike Nolan, a Marine Corps reserve helicopter pilot and trial attorney in civilian life, is hired to defend the company from the criminal investigations, then from a wrongful death lawsuit brought by the most notorious lawyer in America on behalf of the First Lady. Nolan knows that to prevail in the firestorm against his client, he has to find out what really caused Marine One to crash, and why the president threw caution aside to go to a meeting no one seems to know about. To clear his client, Nolan must win the highest-profile trial of the last hundred years with very little working for him, and everything working against him.

Marine One expertly mixes political intrigue with courtroom drama and fast-paced action in the most exciting thriller of the year.

Huston's Best Thriller Yet
Marine One

Huston is a master storyteller, often combining political suspense with fast-paced courtroom drama. His latest thriller is also his best. It grabs the reader from the first word and does not let up. On the first page the President's helicopter, Marine One, crashes and kills the President and everyone else on board. Attorney Mike Nolan, a reserve Marine helicopter pilot himself, is hired to represent the French manufacturer of the helicopter in a criminal investigation and a wrongful death lawsuit by the First Lady. Nolan knows that in order to prevail, he must find out what caused the helicopter to crash and why the President chose to fly to Camp David in a horrible storm.

Huston's bio says he is an aviation attorney in real life; he clearly is an expert on aviation and litigation. He uses his expertise to tell a brilliant story, filled with political intrigue, suspense and excellent courtroom drama. Once I started reading this outstanding book, I could not put it down. It is a sophisticated thriller that stands above others in this genre. I strongly recommend it.

When March Went Mad: The Game That Transformed Basketball by Seth Davis - I love this book.

The dramatic story of how two legendary players burst on the scene in an NCAA championship that gave birth to modern basketball

Thirty years ago, college basketball was not the sport we know today. Few games were televised nationally and the NCAA tournament had just expanded from thirty-two to forty teams. Into this world came two exceptional players: Earvin Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. Though they played each other only once, in the 1979 NCAA finals, that meeting launched an epic rivalry, transformed the NCAA tournament into the multibillion-dollar event it is today, and laid the groundwork for the resurgence of the NBA.

In When March Went Mad, Seth Davis recounts the dramatic story of the season leading up to that game, as Johnson's Michigan State Spartans and Bird's Indiana State Sycamores overcame long odds and great doubts that their unheralded teams could compete at the highest level. Davis also tells the stories of their remarkable coaches, Jud Heathcote and Bill Hodges—who were new to their schools but who set their own paths to build great teams—and he shows how tensions over race and class heightened the drama of the competition. When Magic and Bird squared off in Salt Lake City on March 26, 1979, the world took notice—to this day it remains the most watched basketball game in the history of television—and the sport we now know was born.

I love this book.
I didn't see the game - heard about it of course. This book lets you in on so much more than just the one game at the end of the season. It tells you how Magic ended up at MSU and how Bird came to be at Indiana State - it wasn't where he started college. It also gives you details about all of the teammates - some of whom, while mostly forgotten by history, were also pretty darned good basketball players. Neither Michigan State nor Indiana State, it turns out, were one man teams. This book takes you through all the important events leading up to the 1978-79 season and it takes you through the entire season. Some of the events and some of the games that occured before the final were as interesting, or more so, than the final game, so that information isn't just filler - not just stuff to take up space until you get to the main event - it's riveting reading. This book isn't a literary masterpiece, but it's a great read about a not-so-long-ago time when things were... different (I'd say better) in college basketball. These days, Bird and Magic would never meet in the championship because they both would already be in the NBA by this point in their careers - and that's a shame.

I Hate People!: Kick Loose from the Overbearing and Underhanded Jerks at Work and Get What You Want Out of Your Job by Marc Hershon - For A Select Crowd

Face it, whether your company has 10 employees or 10,000, you must grapple with people you cant stand in the office. Luckily Jonathan Littman and Marc Hershon have written I HATE PEOPLE!, a smart, counter-intuitive, andirreverentturn on the classic workplace self-help book that will show you how to identify theTen Least Wanted-the people you hate-whilerevealing the strategies to neutralize them. Learn to fly right by the Stop Sign (nay-sayer) and rise above the pronouncements of the Know-it-None. I HATE PEOPLE! will teach you how to carve out more time for yourself by becominga Soloist-one of those bold individuals daring to work alone or collaborate with a handful of other talented people....while artfully deflecting the rest.

For A Select Crowd
As a current corporate director of human resources, I am on a continual quest for books on people management. That is, good books on people management. With this work by Jonathan Littman and Marc Hershon I have found a book that is both good and fun to read.

In my role in HR, the majority of my work deals with the conflicts between people that hate each other. Its true. When we really boil down our human resources related issues, it usually involves two different `types that cannot get along. I noted these details in one chapter of my book, Wingtips with Spurs however Littman and Hershon have carried my observations to a more in-depth level.

While I applaud anyone that can pull off the `solo career, for the vast majority this is just not possible. In fact, even with a solo career, you will be faced with having to occasionally interact with Mr. Stumbling Block, Ms.Wrong Turn and Time Waster, Jr.

This book is primarily written for people that believe it would be best to work alone. I think this way of thinking is wrong on several levels but I fully understand the mindset. For those of us who must live in a normal society both inside and outside the corporate arena, Jerry Spences How to Argue & Win Every Time: At Home, At Work, In Court, Everywhere, Everyday offers an instructive read on how to get along with almost everyone. I have read all of the others by the Big Name authors and Spences book stands head and shoulders above them on actual practicality and usefulness. I also highly recommend Sylvia Lafairs great work in Dont Bring It to Work: Breaking the Family Patterns That Limit Success. If you decide it is better to get along with people rather than avoid them, either of these books will set you on the right path.

Again, I must say this is a good book and very fun way to spend the afternoon.

I hope you find this review helpful.

a selection from CHAPTER I:

WHAT CLAIRVOYANCE IS

Clairvoyance means literally nothing more than clear seeing, and it is a word which has been sorely misused, and even degraded so far as to be employed to describe the trickery of a mountebank in a variety show. Even in its more restricted sense it covers a wide range of phenomena, differing so greatly in character that it is not easy to give a definition of the word which shall be at once succinct and accurate. It has been called spiritual vision, but no rendering could well be more misleading than that, for in the vast majority of cases there is no faculty connected with it which has the slightest claim to be honoured by so lofty a name.

For the purpose of this treatise we may, perhaps, define it as the power to see what is hidden from ordinary physical sight. It will be as well to premise that it is very frequently (though by no means always) accompanied by what is called clairaudience, or the power to hear what would be inaudible to the ordinary physical ear; and we will for the nonce take our title as covering this faculty also, in order to avoid the clumsiness of perpetually using two long words where one will suffice.

Let me make two points clear before I begin. First, I am not writing for those who do not believe that there is such a thing as clairvoyance, nor am I seeking to convince those who are in doubt about the matter. In so small a work as this I have no space for that; such people must study the many books containing lists of cases, or make experiments for themselves along mesmeric lines. I am addressing myself to the better-instructed class who know that clairvoyance exists, and are sufficiently interested in the subject to be glad of information as to its methods and possibilities; and I would assure them that what I write is the result of much careful study and experiment, and that though some of the powers which I shall have to describe may seem new and wonderful to them, I mention no single one of which I have not myself seen examples.

Insight of the astral vision
It was one of the first books by C. W.Leadbeater I have read and I was truly inspired to read it further and further. As a nautral psychic, the author writes, in his natural way, about his own experiences in the physical and astral plane while using the 'clear sight'. Moreover, it shows it is possible for mostly anyone to acquire this ability and also shows the wonderful advantages of having this so-called gift. Finally, this practical yet complex book gives a few instructions which can be useful to people like us who wish to develop and perhaps start seeing as clear as its author does.

Retribution: A Lew Fonesca Novel by Stuart M. Kaminsky - Lean writing and a great mystery that will haunt you

Stuart Kaminsky, the veteran author of more than forty novels, has created a new P.I., Lew Fonesca. Lew is a world-weary guy who, after his wife died, got in a car and just drove until he wound up in front of a Dairy Queen in Sarasota, Florida. Now he makes his way amid bail jumpers and lost wives, solving the little cases and trying to get by while figuring out how to make the rest of his life make sense.

Lean writing and a great mystery that will haunt you
Kaminsky's books always get under my skin, even when I pick them up at the worst times - when I'm half-awake, feeling distracted or just not prepared to lose myself in a good book. Even so, I usually can't put down a Kaminsky novel until the very last page.
This time around, Lew Fonseca, a detective who's appeared in other Kaminsky novels, is trying to find out what happened to a young runaway named Adele. She is somehow connected to a very solitary and eccentric bestselling author and the loss of some valuable manuscripts.
The mystery in this one will certainly hold your interest but equally compelling is Kaminsky's style. His books are lean and taut, with no wasted words or "padding" to lessen the drama and suspense...yet somehow he manages to create complex, believable characters and compelling mysteries as well. I'm always amazed at how well he pulls it off, book after book. With books costing as much as they do (the paperback edition of this one set me back 6.99) you might as well spend your money on a book written by a writer who is this good. Then, of course, you're going to want to buy more of his books...but trust me, it'll be worth it.

A Guide to Weight Loss Surgery: Professional and Personal Views by Rhonda L. Hamilton M.D. - must-read if you're considering weight loss surgery

With obesity rising at alarming rates in the US, UK, and developed countries around the world - so much that the US Department of Health has officially classified obesity as an illness and the World Health Organization has dubbed it a pandemic - weight-loss surgery is also on the rise. Traditional weight-loss programs - diet, exercise, and pharmaceuticals - are only effective for significant and sustained weight loss for about 10 percent of all people who try. The results are even more dismal for the obese aiming to lose not just a few pounds, but 50, 75, or more. And their health lies in the balance, because obesity or morbid obesity (100 pounds or more overweight by medical standards) increases by 50 to 100 percent their risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers. Weight-loss surgery, however, is effective in bringing 80 percent of obese people to or close to average weight for their height, explains Dr. Hamilton, an Instructor at Harvard Medical School. And most sustain that weight loss for at least 10 years.

Hamilton doesnt perform such surgeries, but this Tufts-educated doctor has more than general medical insight. She had the surgery herself six years ago, reducing from the size 20 she was then to the size 8 she is now. Surgical weight loss is unequivocally more effective than any other method, she says. Certainly there are complexities, risks, and some grueling decisions involved. But life as an obese person can be more risky to health and more grueling to mental health, she adds. The National Institutes of Health apparently agree, as NIH has issued recommendations for morbidly obese people to have weight-loss surgery. In the United States alone weight-loss surgeries have risen from 12,700 in 1988 to more than 78,000 in 2005. Still, fewer than one percent of the patients who fit the requirements for weight-loss surgery are ever referred to such a specialist, says Hamilton. And in blacks, where the prevalence of obesity is even higher, the referral rates are even lower, she adds. Hamilton makes clear the rewards, and the risks, of surgery that reduces stomach size or removes a piece of the intestine so calories cannot be absorbed. This book includes interviews with previously obese males and females whove had the surgery, as well as descriptions of the procedures, recovery times, costs, and insurance issues.

must-read if you're considering weight loss surgery
I found this to be an extremely useful book if you're considering bariatric surgery. Like many books in this category, it's written by an M.D.--however, Dr. Hamilton has struggled with her weight all her life and actually had gastric bypass herself 8 years ago. She discusses at great length why diets and exercise fail 95% of the public--especially those who have 50 pounds or more to lose--and why the risks of surgery may be considerably less than the risks to our health of being morbidly obese. An excellent book--expensive, but well worth reading (you might try your local library if money is tight!).

Highland Fire by Hannah Howell - A Reprint

New York Times bestselling author Hannah Howell delivers her most enthralling novel yet with the story of an innocent beauty and an unjustly accused laird who discover a rapturous passion as they embark upon a wondrous journey across the rugged Scottish highlands... Swept overboard and stranded on the rocky shores of Scotland, Moira Robertson is left with only the tattered clothes on her back-and the mysterious stranger who came to her aid on the ship. Although their close surroundings unsettle her, she soon cannot resist his touch which awakens a burning ache deep within her. But can she trust her life-and her heart-to this darkly seductive man? Tavig MacAlpin is a condemned man. Accused of a murder he did not commit, his escape is thwarted by a flame-haired beauty. He must continue his search for justice, but fate has bound him to this Scottish lass-and to a slow, sensual desire that will not be denied- Praise for Hannah Howell and her Highland novels- Few authors portray the Scottish highlands as lovingly or colorfully as Hannah Howell. -Publishers Weekly Expert storyteller Howell pens another Highland winner. -Romantic Times

A Reprint
I love Hannah Howell's Scottish novels having read all of them and although I enjoyed reading this book it began to become familiar, I had a feeling I had read it before and after doing a little bit of checking I had. It was published in 1995 under the title Fire and pub under another name Howell uses Anna Jennet, it seems that her earlier books are being published again but under different titles so readers should be aware. There is another book due to be published soon called Highland Captive which went by the earlier title of Elfkings Lady. Her brand new novel will be published in December and will be called Highland Sinner. But having said that for new readers these earlier books were very good and I do recommend them. I won't write about what this book is about as previous reviewers have already done that but just be aware that some of these books are reprints of her earlier books.

THE ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU (UPDATED w/LINKED TOC) by H. G. Wells - 4.5 Stars...Where It All Started

The Island of Doctor Moreau is a 1896 science fiction novel written by H. G. Wells, addressing ideas of society and community, human nature and identity, playing God and Darwinism. The mythic figure of the chimera, a human/animal hybrid, is brought into the scientific age.

Source: Wikipedia.org

4.5 Stars...Where It All Started
These days, the premise of genetic manipulation and moral complexities on an island may sound intriguing if not derivative. Think "Jurassic Park" and "Lord of the Flies." In this case, though, the author predates those novels by decades, creating a scientific thriller that became a building block for generations to come.

Prendick becomes a castaway of sorts on an uncharted island, and soon discovers man-beasts that show uncommon intelligence if not disturbing signs of experimentation. Soon, he meets Dr. Moreau and Montgomery, men intent on exploring the possibilities of vivisection, blending mankind with animals. Horrified, he worries that he will be next on the doctor's table in the House of Pain. Instead, the Beast People begin reverting to their bestial states and turning on their human lords, slowly rejecting the Law that the cold-hearted doctor has instilled, through hypnotism, into their brains. Moreau, Montgomery, and Prendick become the endangered species.

Told as a first-person account, "The Island of Dr. Moreau" is my first venture into the writing of HG Wells. I'm surprised by the readability, considering its date and British origins. Their is little of the pretentious dialect we see and hear in British entertainment.

While Wells seems to wrestle here with a reconciliation of a religious society in the late 1800s and the emergence of evolutionary theory, he keeps the story fast-paced and entertaining. He seems to push against the ideas of an angry, distant God, as well as the ramifications of mankind in the throes of Darwinism. In his own words, he called the story a "youthful blasphemy," though it seems to be more an honest questioning of how and/or if science and faith could work hand in hand.

Dated as some of the scientific aspects may be, this is a clear stepping stone to many of the novels of the last few years. Crichton and company owe Wells a huge debt, and as for me, I'll be picking up more of his books.

Lost Summer by Alex McAulay - loved it!

From the author of Bad Girls comes another dramatic novel of survival and suspense. Its Laguna Beach meets Cape Fear when a rich girl from California confronts murder and isolation on North Carolinas stormy Outer Banks.

When Caitlin Rosss mother takes her and her brother to an island in the remote Outer Banks for the summer, Caitlin is furious. She was planning on spending the summer hanging out by the pool, partying, shopping, and singing backup in her boyfriends band, Box of Flowers. North Carolina isnt anything like California, and Caitlin doesnt fit in. But her troubled mother is too busy popping pills and trying to win back her creepy ex-boyfriend to care.

At first, the only friend Caitlin makes on the desolate island is a local misfit named Danielle. But things start to improve when she meets a bunch of visiting prep school boys and gets swept up in their exciting world. Then, one dark night, she witnesses a murder and begins to suspect that her new friends arent really her friends at all. With a powerful hurricane approaching, and the island cut off from the outside world, Caitlin has no one to turn to but herself . . . and whether shell live to see another summer is the biggest mystery of all.

loved it!
i picked this book up because i fell in love with mcaulays 1st book Bad Girls two years ago. Lost Summer exceeded my expectations! The characters are very realistic (trust me, I live in San Diego, I know all about the spoiled rich kids here b/c i am one (La Jolla is a small township in san diego) Luke is a perfect replica of what can happen to unsupervised, neglected rich kids out here! or probably anywhere!)

this book was also very informative about the Outer Banks region in North Carolina. I believe the island they stay on is modeled after Ocracoke but i could be wrong. I do want to visit the OBX one day and when I do I'll definitely bring this book along to re-read!

what is the book about? bascially caitlin's mom is a refugee from the valley of the dolls, shes so cracked out on perscription pills shes lost complete touch with reality. apparently she gets in touch with an old b/f from high school and decides to drag 16 year old caitlin and 11 year old luke cross country to the outer banks in North Carolina which are a set of islands. theyre not like the hamptons or the caribbean, theyre barely populated! the biggest one has maybe 1000 people in it total! they dont even have a movie theater. it's really horrifying for someone who is used to the luxuries a city has to offer (i mean they dont even have a starbucks!!!) and worst of all you can only get to the island by ferry or helicopter or you are trapped! oh... and did i mention hurricane season??? (for contrast just imagine la jolla as laguna beach but wealthier, way more cosmopolitan and way more stuff to do)

Its No Secret: From Nas to Jay-Z, from Seduction to Scandal--a Hip-Hop Helen of Troy Tells All by Carmen Bryan - couldnt put it down

Carmen Bryan is no stranger to the rap world. Not only did she work at Def Jam and Capitol Records but she shares a daughter with hip-hop superstar Nas -- a relationship made extremely public through Nass celebrity status, rap lyrics, and the ever-present media. Now, in Its No Secret, a strong, resilient Carmen bares all, telling her side of the story and leaving no detail unturned -- with the true candor and raw emotion of someone who has been there, done that, and survived.

From a clandestine relationship with Nass biggest rival, Jay-Z, that stirred up the biggest feud in hip-hop history, to seeing her reputation in tatters and a once loving relationship with Nas fall apart, Carmen depicts her trying journey to become the strong woman and mother she is today. After years of turmoil that included drugs, sex, greed, and violence -- and abandoning what she had always prized above all, her freedom -- Carmen took a stand, focusing on herself. After years of pursuit by the media, Carmen sets the record straight in Its No Secret -- and has no regrets.

Throughout this wonderful book, Father Keenan is not only speaking to each reader individually --- he is listening, using examples from real-life situations. This is a unique spiritual lesson book. Father Keenan employs a different method from his previous two books, as we get a more-focused perception of the man behind the writing. This exceptional personal touch will help strengthen one's mind and soul --- and ultimately one's heart --- on what could otherwise be a lonely and futile search. You'll find yourself somewhere on these pages, and discover your own strengths and weaknesses on a journey toward complete spirituality as you come to an understanding and fulfillment of what it really means to not only "feel it in your heart," but to live it and share it from there.
