The Unknown Guest. by MAURICE MAETERLINCK - Proof of the Other side by nobel prise winner!

My Essay on Death[1] led me to make a conscientious enquiry into
the present position of the great mystery, an enquiry which I
have endeavoured to render as complete as possible. I had hoped
that a single volume would be able to contain the result of these
investigations, which, I may say at once, will teach nothing to
those who have been over the same ground and which have nothing
to recommend them except their sincerity, their impartiality and
a certain scrupulous accuracy. But, as I proceeded, I saw the
field widening under my feet, so much so that I have been obliged
to divide my work into two almost equal parts. The first is now
published and is a brief study of veridical apparitions and
hallucinations and haunted houses, or, if you will, the phantasms
of the living and the dead; of those manifestations which have
been oddly and not very appropriately described as
psychometric; of the knowledge of the future: presentiments,
omens, premonitions, precognitions and the rest; and lastly of
the Elberfeld horses. In the second, which will be published
later, I shall treat of the miracles of Lourdes and other places,
the phenomena of so called materialization, of the divining-rod
and of fluidic asepsis, not unmindful withal of a diamond dust of
the miraculous that hangs over the greater marvels in that
strange atmosphere into which we are about to pass.

[1] Published in English, in an enlarged form, under the title of
Our Eternity (London and New York, 1913)--Translators Note.

Proof of the Other side by nobel prise winner!
Ghosts of the Dead can cause psychometric incidents...and provide knowledge of the future. This book proves such, by a Noble Price wining author. The scope and evidence by Nobel Prize winning author Maurice Maeterlinck's investigation into the supernatural will prove the occult to any skeptic!

Signs of Change by William Morris - I'm seeing capitalism as the failed system right now...

The word Revolution, which we Socialists are so often forced to use,
has a terrible sound in most peoples ears, even when we have
explained to them that it does not necessarily mean a change
accompanied by riot and all kinds of violence, and cannot mean a
change made mechanically and in the teeth of opinion by a group of
men who have somehow managed to seize on the executive power for the
moment. Even when we explain that we use the word revolution in its
etymological sense, and mean by it a change in the basis of society,
people are scared at the idea of such a vast change, and beg that you
will speak of reform and not revolution. As, however, we Socialists
do not at all mean by our word revolution what these worthy people
mean by their word reform, I cant help thinking that it would be a
mistake to use it, whatever projects we might conceal beneath its
harmless envelope. So we will stick to our word, which means a
change of the basis of society; it may frighten people, but it will
at least warn them that there is something to be frightened about,
which will be no less dangerous for being ignored; and also it may
encourage some people, and will mean to them at least not a fear, but
a hope.

Fear and Hope--those are the names of the two great passions which
rule the race of man, and with which revolutionists have to deal; to
give hope to the many oppressed and fear to the few oppressors, that
is our business; if we do the first and give hope to the many, the
few MUST be frightened by their hope; otherwise we do not want to
frighten them; it is not revenge we want for poor people, but
happiness; indeed, what revenge can be taken for all the thousands of
years of the sufferings of the poor?

However, many of the oppressors of the poor, most of them, we will
say, are not conscious of their being oppressors (we shall see why
presently); they live in an orderly, quiet way themselves, as far as
possible removed from the feelings of a Roman slave-owner or a
Legree; they know that the poor exist, but their sufferings do not
present themselves to them in a trenchant and dramatic way; they
themselves have troubles to bear, and they think doubtless that to
bear trouble is the lot of humanity, nor have they any means of
comparing the troubles of their lives with those of people lower in
the social scale; and if ever the thought of those heavier troubles
obtrudes itself upon them, they console themselves with the maxim
that people do get used to the troubles they have to bear, whatever
they may be.

I'm seeing capitalism as the failed system right now...
This is a brilliant book that presents an excellent working form of socialism, one that's prosperous and peacefully implemented. The author points out that it is not necessary for change come about through violent or coercive methods. It is just a matter of the people uniting under the desire for a fairer and more equitable solution to the problems that the vast majority face.

My parents are firm believers in capitalism, and I embraced their views for quite some time. It was only recently that I began to re-think everything. With the housing crisis, the bailouts, and all the scandals and corruption I just can't see how the average Joe can get a fair shake. Then I started looking into our economic history and found that the people have been being fleeced in the name of capitalism for a very long time.

People are always saying that socialism can't ever be truly implemented, but I'm seeing capitalism as the failed system right now, one that can never be truly exist as long as robber barons continue to keep congress in their pockets.

The only system that gives the people the power, protection, and prosperity that they deserve is socialism, and this book will explain all of that. True socialism would put an end to the thievery and suffering that the current system has caused. Something has to change, and this book will show us how to make that change and explain why it's so necessary.

Awesome
This is a great inspirational book for all ages and all faiths. My favorite section was Spiritual Healing and Growth. It was a great enforcement to some basic facts, but things we don't always remember when our faith is being tested. "We are the architects of our fate. The master builders of the house we make" . . . but the character built upon the Solid Rock will forever endure". In times like these, times of war, times of poverty, times of flood, times of broken homes, it is great to remember our source of help and strength. R. Holden has done a great job of covering day to day struggles and accomplishments. We are looking forward to the other volumes.

Tarzan the Terrible by Edgar Rice Burroughs - Tarzan tracks Jane to the strange land of Pal-ul-don

Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III PAN-AT-LEE NIGHT had fallen upon uncharted Pal-ul- don. A slender moon, low in the west, bathed the white faces of the chalk cliffs presented to her, in a mellow, unearthly glow. Black were the shadows in Kor-ul-ja, Gorge-of-lions, where dwelt the tribe of the same name under Es-sat, their chief. From an aperture near the summit of the lofty escarpment a hairy figure emerged — the head and shoulders first — and fierce eyes scanned the cliff side in every direction. It was Es-sat, the chief. To right and left and below he looked as though to assure himself that he was unobserved, but no other figure moved upon the cliff face, nor did another hairy body protrude from any of the numerous cave mouths from the high-flung abode of the chief to the habitations of the more lowly members of the tribe nearer the cliffs base. Then he moved outward upon the sheer face of the white chalk wall. In the half-light of the baby moon it appeared that the heavy, shaggy black figure moved across the face of the perpendicular wall in some miraculous manner, but closer examination would haverevealed stout pegs, as large around as a mans wrist protruding from holes in the cliff into which they were driven. Es-sats four handlike members and his long, sinuous tail permitted him to move with consummate ease whither he chose — a gigantic rat upon a mighty wall. As he progressed upon his way he avoided the cave mouths, passing either above or below those that lay in his path. The outward appearance of these caves was similar. An opening from eight to as much as twenty feet long by eight high and four to six feet deep was cut into the chalklike rock of the cliff, in the back of this large opening, which formed what might be described as the front veranda of the home, was an opening about t...

Tarzan tracks Jane to the strange land of Pal-ul-don
The original novel "Tarzan of the Apes" is clearly the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs novel and the one you have to read if you read only one ERB pulp fiction adventure, but all things considered "Tarzan the Terrible" is a better example of what would be the typical Burroughs yarn. The eighth book in the Tarzan series, "Tarzan the Terrible" continues the adventure begun in "Tarzan the Untamed" when the Lord of the Jungle discovered the burnt corpse of his wife, Jane after German soldiers visit his African home. ERB never really did like Jane all that much (he though La of Opar would have been a better mate) and killed her off. However, he had no more success in keeping her dead than Arthur Conan Doyle did with killing off Sherlock Holmes, and Tarzan learns that Jane was not murdered by the Germans but kidnapped and sets off in pursuit. Originally published as a seven-part serial in "Argosy All-Story Weekly" in February-March, 1921, "Tarzan the Terrible" continues his private war against the German invaders.

Tarzan has spent two months tracking his mate to Pal-ul-don ("Land of Men"), a hidden valley in Zaire, when he finds a land of strange animals (dinosaurs) and a pair of strange humanoids with tails that he befriends. Ta-den, is a hairless, white skinned, Ho-don warrior, while O-mat is a hairy, black skinned, Waz-don, chief of the tribe of Kor-ul-ja. Of course, in this new world Tarzan becomes a captive but impresses his captors so well that they name him Tarzan-Jad-Guru ("Tarzan the Terrible") because of his skills and accomplishments. Meanwhile, a second visitor comes to Pal-ul-don, wearing only a loin cloth and carrying an Enfield rifle along with a long knife, bow and arrows (think about it). However, it is indeed in Pal-ul-don where Jane is now being held captive, a pawn in a religious power struggle that consumes the rest of the novel as Tarzan tries to rescue her and set things to right in the strange kingdom he has discovered.

"Tarzan the Terrible" has all of the elements you expect from your standard Edgar Rice Burroughs novel. The hero pursues his beloved and has to go through an extended series of fights and escapes to rescue her. Jane does exhibit a bit more spunk this time around (she captures, cleans, and eats a rabbit), so there is an effort to make her more worthy of her jungle mate than before. The religious and social customs of Pal-ul-don are worked out a bit more than we have seen previously in the Tarzan series, which would become more dependent on Tarzan discover more "lost cities" in the interior of darkest Africa with the descendants of Roman legionnaires, crusaders, or whatever. "Tarzan the Terrible" is almost as good as "Tarzan the Untamed," and in many ways represents the end of the glory days of Tarzan. You are only one-third of the way through the series at this point, but after this one the stories get a bit redundant and repetitive as ERB milks his romantic adventure formula for all its worth.

The Thread of Life: The Story of Genes and Genetic Engineering by Susan Aldridge - Short, clear, yet in depth.

DNA fingerprinting, genetic engineering of food, genetic screening, gene therapy, the human genome project...there is no shortage of news these days about the genetic revolution. The purpose of this book is to take the interested reader behind the headlines to explore the fascinating world of molecular biology. Eschewing jargon, author Susan Aldridge gives an accessible account of the world of DNA and also explores its present and future applications. In the first part of the book, she explains what DNA is and how it functions within living organisms. In the second part, she explores genetic engineering and its applications to humans--such as gene therapy, genetic screening, and DNA fingerprinting. In the third, the author looks at the wider world of biotechnology and how genetic engineering can be applied to such problems as producing vegetarian cheese or cleaning up the environment. Finally, she explains how knowledge of the structure and function of genes sheds light on evolution and our place in the world. Aldridge has written with a light touch full of historical references; her achievement will make rewarding reading for anyone who reads popular accounts of the life sciences.

Short, clear, yet in depth.
This is a straightforward exposition; it doesn't try to come at the material from a novel angle (cf Ridley's "Genome), nor does it dwell on arguments such as nature vs. nurture. What it does do is explain the science in remarkable depth in a short book. For me, much of the material was review/clarification, but I suspect it would work for those with less background. Aldridge is disciplined in what she covers, writes clearly, uses diagrams when it will help, and seems to choose just the correct level of detail. She includes details you might not expect to find, when they are important: for example, some human proteins cannot be made by bacteria because humans add sugars to these protein molecules AFTER they are created using RNA, and bacteria do not have this capability. I do wish the index were more complete, it just is not helpful enough if you wish to review something covered earlier. Also, in the last section on bio-technology, Aldridge is much less disciplined, tries to cover too much too fast, and I found myself with numerous unanswered questions.

Understanding the Dangers of Cesarean Birth: Making Informed Decisions by Nicette Jukelevics - excellent, thorough discussion of cesarean section

Cesarean delivery - childbirth through an incision in the mothers lower abdomen - is now the most common major surgical procedure performed in the United States. No one argues over the fact that it can be a life-saving procedure when the baby or mother is at risk. But for almost three decades in this nation, cesarean deliveries have increased, without substantially better outcomes for babies or mothers. Experts warn that up to 50 percent of the more than 1 million C-sections performed here each year are unnecessary. And that is where Nicette Jukelevics, a certified childbirth educator, researcher and writer, steps in with this book. Jukelevics aims to give women the insights they need to make an informed decision about whether natural or C-section birth is best for them and their babies. She explains when C-sections are necessary, and when they are not needed. She also addresses the overuse and misuse of medical procedures that can complicate labor and lead to C-sections, as well as reasons doctors may support or suggest C-sections, including outdated medical information, fear of liability, and economic advantages measured in doctors time.

This work also examines midwifery practices shown to safely reduce cesarean deliveries, but ignored or resisted by hospitals. Understanding the Dangers of Cesarean Birth will interest not only expectant and future parents, but also to students and scholars of womens health, nursing, and public health.

excellent, thorough discussion of cesarean section
Every pregnant woman in America should read this book. Ms. Jukelevics is very thorough in making her case that women need to be more informed of the risks of cesarean before agreeing to this surgery. excellent book!

Climate Chaos: Your Health at Risk What You Can Do to Protect Yourself and Your Family by Steven M. Shapiro - Climate Chaos Your Health at Risk

Why should we care about climate chaos and global warming? Because, among other risky outcomes, they may seriously harm our health! Scientists around the world are in agreement that global warming, more aptly named climate change, is occurring and human activity is the primary cause. The debate now is in the scientific and policy worlds about just how harmful climate change will be and what are the best ways to stop it. One of those scientists is author Cindy Parker, who believes climate change is the most health-damaging problem humanity has ever faced. Parker has thus immersed herself during the past ten years in educating the public and health professionals about how climate change will affect our well-being. Here, she and husband, Steve Shapiro, a psychologist and former journalist, describe what we can expect if climate change continues unabated. The authors explain our possible physical and mental responses to such climate change factors as heat stress, poor air quality, insufficient water resources, and the rise of infectious diseases fueled by even minor increases in temperature. They also show how other changes that may result from climate change-including sea level rise, extreme weather events, and altered food supplies can harm human health. Parker and Shapiro have found, however, that just talking about the problem is not enough. Actions that can prevent or reduce climate changes harm are presented in each chapter.

To illustrate how much global warming will affect our lives, Parker and Shapiro begin their book with a chapter showing the worst-case scenario if climate change continues without intervention, and end the book with the best case scenario if we act now. Their eye-opening work will appeal to everyone who wants to remain healthy as we challenge this world-altering problem of our own making . While written for a lay audience in a manner that limits technical terminology, the book will also appeal to students and professionals of public health, medicine, environmental psychology, and science who will find the focus on health and the extensive referencing useful.

Climate Chaos Your Health at Risk
Dr. Parker and Dr. Shapiro bring home how Climate Change is and will change all of our lives and not for the good. The depth of both their research and understanding of the problem(s) forced me to pay attention. This is no frivolous gloom and doom book based on opinion. This is scientific fact.

If we wake up and act now the gloom and doom may be mitigated. They give us direction on how we can save ourselves and our planet.

Climate Chaos is readable. One does not need a doctorate to read and understand what is being said. At the same time we are never talked down to.

I highly recommend Climate Chaos. It should be a part of every thinking, concerned person's library. It may even wake up the activist in you.

Now What? Inspired By The Word of God by Ernestine Burke - Wonderful Book for Newer and Older Christians!

"Jesus, I accept you as my personal Lord and Savior. Please come
into my heart and forgive me of all of my sins." This prayer is the
prayer all of us New Christians were told to say once we were ready
to give ourselves over to God. We came into the church, and during
the Benediction (end of church for all of you really New Christians)
we answered the call to give ourselves over to Christ. We walked
down that long aisle to the front of the whole entire church, tears
flowing, and body bent and beaten by the world. We walked down that
aisle to Salvation! Everyone in the church cried out "Thank you
Jesus!" The pastor greeted us at the end of that long walk with open
arms. Oh what a glorious occasion! He put his hands on our head,
prayed a magnificent prayer, I mean a prayer so powerful he almost
knocked us down with the thrust of his hand! "Oh, this must be the
Power of the Holy Ghost they keep talking about!" Now all we needed
to do was ask Jesus to be our personal Lord and Savior. The pastor
even gave us the words to say. And we did as we were guided, for
after all, this will get us to God!! Then after all of the cheers and
Hallelujahs, we were introduced to the church as a new member and
a New Christian. We are sat down and given a list of all the church
committees, and all of the organizations (that never have enough
people to run it) and encouraged to join at least one. And if we have any other questions, the pastor would be in his office Tuesdays and
Fridays between 10 am and 2 pm. Then we were sent on our way,
back into the world from which we came.
So we go on our way. Finally, we asked Jesus into our hearts and
now we are saved! All of our sins are forgiven! We are New
Christians! But wait a minute I don't feel any different. I don't look
any different. Aren't there some rules or something I need to follow?
Can I still go to the bar? NOW WHAT?

Wonderful Book for Newer and Older Christians!
"Now What?" is a book directed mainly towards steering newer Christians in the right direction. While it gives great Bible verse recommendations, it also gives the "newly-convicted" advice on how to deal with their new-found feelings and their new friends in the congregation (of any denomination). The book lets you know what you should look out for and what you should look into. Ernestine Burke writes her text in an easy-to-read, conversational manner (especially for the younger crowd).

I also recommend this book for Christians who have been in the church for awhile. For this group of people, it gives you insight on how newer and younger Christians in your church may be feeling and will shine a different light on how to deal with and accept them.

Ms. Burke also tells of her own life struggles of being a depressed, single mother---whose life is changed by the re-discovery of Christ and the church-family. Read it today!

. . . succeeds in conveying the exciting and fascinating character of the concert party genre, as well as showing clearly how this material can be used to rethink a number of contemporary theoretical themes and issues. -- Karin Barber

Drawing on her participation as an actress in concert party performances, oral histories of performers, and archival research, Catherine M. Cole traces the history and development of Ghanas concert party tradition. Cole shows how concert parties combined an eclectic array of cultural influences, adapting characters and songs from American movies, popular British ballads, and local storytelling traditions into a spirited blend of comedy and social commentary.

A companion video, Stageshakers!, by Nathan Kwame Braun, brings the concert party to life for English-speaking audiences.

The Book of Tea by Kakuzo Okakura - Yonde Sono Hon.

That a nation should construct one of its most resonant national ceremonies round a cup of tea will surely strike a chord of sympathy with at least some readers of this review. To many foreigners, nothing is so quintessentially Japanese as the tea ceremony--more properly, the way of tea--with its austerity, its extravagantly minimalist stylization, and its concentration of extreme subtleties of meaning into the simplest of actions. The Book of Tea is something of a curiosity: written in English by a Japanese scholar (and issued here in bilingual form), it was first published in 1906, in the wake of the naval victory over Russia with which Japan asserted its rapidly acquired status as a world-class military power. It was a peak moment of Westernization within Japan. Clearly, behind the publication was an agenda, or at least a mission to explain. Around its account of the ceremony, The Book of Tea folds an explication of the philosophy, first Taoist, later Zen Buddhist, that informs its oblique celebration of simplicity and directness--what Okakura calls, in a telling phrase, moral geometry. And the ceremony itself? Its greatest practitioners have always been philosophers, but also artists, connoisseurs, collectors, gardeners, calligraphers, gourmets, flower arrangers. The greatest of them, Sen Rikyu, left a teasingly, maddeningly simple set of rules: Make a delicious bowl of tea; lay the charcoal so that it heats the water; arrange the flowers as they are in the field; in summer suggest coolness; in winter, warmth; do everything ahead of time; prepare for rain; and give those with whom you find yourself every consideration. A disciple remarked that this seemed elementary. Rikyu replied, Then if you can host a tea gathering without deviating from any of the rules I have just stated, I will become your disciple. A Zen reply. Fascinating. --Robin Davidson, Amazon.co.uk

Yonde Sono Hon.
Back in the sixties (which happened in the seventies) this book was a cult classic. Everyone in Berkeley had a brick & board book case with Steal This Book, and Kahlil Gibran, and Mao, and Ferlingetti, and the Tuttle edition of this book.

Tuttle bound it in hand made washi, and slid it into a special little box-cover. It had the look and the feel of a special precious gift. The book itself was art.

It is still a special precious gift. It is the gift of insight into Japan, and esthetics, and Tea, and Art, and Xenophobia, and most of all into yourself. This cheap little book has the power to shine a light into a blind spot within your mind. It will change your prospective, and it will teach you that prospective is everything.

In this most egocentric, self-referential, radio talk-show, don't-think-tank, time in our history,it would be well for us to read this book again. Give it to someone you love. Read it for someone you don't yet love.

Scenes of Clerical Life by George Eliot - George Eliot's first published fictional work is a neglected gem by the literary genius

Scenes of Clerical Life is comprised of three tales of three clergymen. Eliot explores different facets of society and various aspects of life such as misfortune, rejection, and repentance. Her stories are remarkable for their insightful and intricate characterization. This book will keep up on the edge of your seat till the last page.

George Eliot's first published fictional work is a neglected gem by the literary genius
George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) was born in Warwickshire in 1819. Her father was an estate manager and farmer. Little Mary Ann knew life in rural England. She would make rural Britain during the time of the industrial revolution her main fictional focus. She is the author of great classics "Middlemarch" "Adam Bede" "The Mill on the Floss" "Romola
and "Daniel Deronda/"
Prior to the publication of these classics there is the charming and touching work "Scenes of a Clerical Life." Mary Ann was living without benefit of clergy with the author/scientist/man of letters George Henry Lewes who couldn't divorce his mad wife to mary the homely but brilliant Mary Ann (she spoke seven languages and had written widely on biblical criticism, science, book reviews and essays of erudition and wit). Lewes suggested she try her hand at fiction. The result is this collection of three stories which was published monthly in the liberal "Westminster Review" owned by the Blackwood Family in 1857. It was later published in book form under the pen name of "George Eliot". Charles Dickens was the only critic who correctly observed that these stories had to have been written by a woman.
The three tales are:
1. The Sad Fortunes of the Rev. Amos Barton-The setting for this story as for the other two is the mythical Midlands town of Milby. Barton is an a very average cleryman who is not well liked by his parishoners. He is in dire poverty supporting several children and a sickly wife Millie. When Mrs. Barton dies we see how the church folks support Barton in his grief. The story is short and touching.
2. Mr. Gilfil's Love Story. This second clergyman in the trilogy of tales is a kindhearted old minister of the gospel. Eliot takes us back to 1788 to the story of his lost love for the beautiful Caterina. Caterina was born in Italy to an opera singer. When he died she was taken to England to be raised by a rich family. Her chief purpose is to sing for the family. She falls in love with a wealthy aristocratic soldier who dies. Mr. Gilfil who has loved her all along then marries Caterina. She herself dies in childbirth. Despite his grief Mr. Gilfil ministers for many years to the people in Milby. This tale is a tragic story of love and loss and
redemptive service to other people. Eliot told realistic stories about ordinary people. She is the a novelist of great psychological depth as well as able to puncture the balloons of hypocrisy always afloat in human society.
Janet's Repentance. Janet is a wealthy woman who is also a battered wife. She is married to Mr Dempster who is a wealthy powerful attorney. Dempster is also an incorrigble drunk and wife beater. One night he cast Janet out into the cold. She is rescued by kind friends and the saintly Rev. Mr. Tryan. We see Janet rescued from despair to a life of useful service. We also overhear debates by the townspeople (serving as a Greek chorus in Eliot's works) commenting on the theological controversies of the day.
These three stories would lead to George Eliot's name becoming known in the literary London world and among the reading publis. Soon her authorial star would rise high in the wild blue yonder of literary immortality. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

The Maculate Muse: Obscene Language in Attic Comedy by Jeffrey Henderson - Maculate Muse review

The pervasive and unrestrained use of obscenity has long been acknowledged as a major feature of fifth-century Attic Comedy; no other Western art form relies so heavily on the sexual and scatological dimensions of language. This acclaimed book, now in a new edition, offers both a comprehensive discussion of the dynamics of Greek obscenity and a detailed commentary on the terminology itself.

After contrasting the peculiar characteristics of the Greek notion of obscenity to modern-day ideas, Henderson discusses obscenitys role in the development of Attic Comedy, its historical origins, varieties, and dramatic function. His analysis of obscene terminology sheds new light on Greek culture, and his discussion of Greek homosexuality offers a refreshing corrective to the idealized Platonic view. He also looks in detail at the part obscenity plays in each of Aristophanes eleven surviving plays. The latter part of the book identifies all the obscene terminology found in the extant examples of Attic Comedy, both complete plays and fragments. Although these terminological entries are arranged in numbered paragraphs resembling a glossary, they can also be read as independent essays on the various aspects of comic obscenity. Terms are explained as they occur in each individual context and in relation to typologically similar terminology. With newly corrected and updated philological material, this second edition of Maculate Muse will serve as an invaluable reference work for the study of Greek drama.

Maculate Muse review
The book's condition is not good. It's very musty. But, the book itself is what I wanted. Thanks. Barbara

WiMax Operators Manual: Building 802.16 Wireless Networks by Daniel Sweeney - One of the first books on WiMax

I enjoyed the foresight provided in this book for potential problems faced by network operators…The practicality of an 802.16 network as a realistic solution also made the book a great resource.

If you are a primary decision-maker about the design and implementation of an 802.16-based wireless public network, then this is the book for you! This manual steers you on architecting and operating a network with wireless, last mile access. This thorough book discusses all layers of the network, as well as management and administration.

Author Daniel Sweeney explains planning, construction, and day-to-day operations of a standards-based broadband network. He discusses the many advantages of broadband wireless, and summarizes its unique difficulties, challenges, and limitations. After reading, you will possess a skill set for successfully planning and managing networks.

One of the first books on WiMax
First up! Daniel Sweeney has come up with one of the first authoritative guides to WiMax. With the huge success of WiFi in many countries, some people have chafed at its short range of 100 meters or so, and its relatively low bandwidth. In response, the IEEE has come up with a standard, 802.16, better known as WiMax. It can offer some 70 Mbps, compared to 2Mbps for WiFi, and at a range of several kilometers. Very nice.

But WiMax introduces new complications, compared to a much simpler WiFi network. No one in the world has yet built an operational WiMax network that is available for public use. Though of course there has been small scale prototyping, which has undoubtedly helped the IEEE define the current WiMax standard.

Sweeney describes here what the features of a WiMax network would be. This book is not restricted to a hard core audience of hardware engineers or software developers. Instead, he has written it as a level accessible to technical managers, who might be considering such a network. There is roughly equal emphasis on both the technical issues of signal propagation and on the business issues of building and running the network.

Still early days yet for WiMax. Which is in fact one of the attractions of this book. Sweeney has given us enough information to seriously contemplate the top level design and economics of a network. Ahead of the curve.

One of the wisest books about business ever written
The principles in this book are based on Daniel Defoe's extensive experiences in international business (in the 1700s), and the advice he wrote then is just as valid for people starting out in business today. In addition to cautionary chapters on debt, partners, and "leaving business to servants", Defoe writes on the personal choices of the successful business person - the perils of expensive living, the value of diligence and "application", and even the dangers of marrying too soon. Recommended.

Visual Effects in A Digital World: A Comprehensive Glossary of over 7,000 Visual Effects Terms by Karen Goulekas - Exactly what I wanted

If you call yourself a computer graphics professional but arent sure of the meaning of cukaloris, Lambertian reflection, or umbra, you might want to pick up a copy of Visual Effects in a Digital World: A Comprehensive Glossary of over 7,000 Visual Effects Terms. Educational, fun, and historically fascinating, this is one of those books that every pixel monkey should have on his or her shelf.

If youve ever wondered what, exactly, rotoscope means (it has three different meanings) or what to eat with a metaball, this book is for you. Chock full of interesting tidbits and a 32-page color gallery of examples, this is probably one of the more interesting technical dictionaries youll ever have the pleasure of looking through.

Perhaps you know the difference between an array and an Arri, but the producer youre trying to explain it to is clueless. The clear, concise definitions listed here can help elucidate these terms and others so that even the most dense suit will, if not understand, at least feel like you must know what youre talking about.

Its one thing to be able to know what buttons to push, but something else entirely to be able to stump your friends with the meaning of arcane terms like Lindenmayer System or octrees. Everyone knows youre a geek. Now you can prove it. --Mike Caputo

Exactly what I wanted
Karen E. Goulekas has saved me quite some time with this book by providing a complete description for over 7,000 visual effects terms often referred to within the industry. In the past, I often had to search the net for certain terms and descriptions that had me baffled...but no more. For those of you who are considering buying this book, know that it isn't a book full of pictures (Although it does contain 32 pages of colour stills); It isn't a book detailing visual effects work in particular films; It is what is says - 'A comprehensive glossary of over 7,000 visual effects terms'. If this is what you're looking for, this book is for you.

Information Security Architecture by Jan Killmeyer Tudor - THOROUGH REFERENCE GUIDE

An effective security plan recognizes the importance of every component within the Information Security Architecture (ISA). Information Security Architecture, Second Edition describes each of these components in detail and outlines the steps necessary to establish an integrated and effective ISA. This new edition of a bestseller keeps the focus on developing the architecture and adds additional information and detail to each chapter for execution of the architecture. The Getting started section has been improved with custom planning templates. The book adds newer concepts such as HoneyPots, Business Continuity Planning, and Disaster Recovery Planning.

THOROUGH REFERENCE GUIDE
This was a great reference to start an Information Security Architecture project. There are many guidelines, procedures and forms that take the guess work out of the administration of such a project. The book is great at keeping you on track with your security objectives. I have found that it is so easy with such large projects to lose sight of the objectives. Security is not only technical assessments of the network and operating components but also a combination of management and administration of personnel, policies and procedures and continuous application of pressure to meeting the security requirements of an organization. This book provides excellent value for the price.

John Dough and the Cherub by Lyman Frank Baum - Review: John Dough and the Cherub

An engrossing piece of juvenile literature. An evil man is after John Dough, the gingerbread man and his buddy cherub. The work captures the fancy of children and is brimming with entertainment. A journey of unceasing adventures and a roller coaster ride that will keep the children on their toes!

Review: John Dough and the Cherub
John Dough and the Cherub is sweet reading. Aimed for younger readers, this book is set in a fanciful world much like Baum's Oz books. This story tells of a gingerbread man come to life much like the fairy tale. It tells of his adventures with his companion, the Cherub, as he dodges his enemy, a sinister man who wishes to eat him to and gain immortality. Recommend reading for nostalgic sentimentality. It hooked me when I was a child and my mother as an adult. (I still like it!)

Circadian Physiology by Ph.D., Roberto Refinetti - First choice as a scientific introduction to circadian rhythms

While the first edition of the critically acclaimed and highly popular Circadian Physiologyoffered a concise but rigorous review of basic and applied research on circadian rhythms, this newest edition provides educators with the primary textbook they need to support a course on this cutting-edge topic. Maintaining the same accessible multidisciplinary approach of the original, this volume provides a thorough grounding in a broad range of topics, while offering instructors many unique advantages.

This impressive handbook provides the foundation, along with the supplementary material, and all the implementation details necessary to run a cutting-edge class on an exceptionally timely and intriguing topic.

This edition of Circadian Physiologynot only updates the material covered in the original, but it also expands its length and scope, presenting many new findings, such as the discovery of new retinal photoreceptors, the identification of several non-hypothalamic circadian pacemakers, and the elucidation of genomic and proteomic mechanisms of biological timing. Three times the length of the original, this volume includes approximately 730 figures and 5,000 bibliographic references, making it a true handbook of circadian physiology.

First choice as a scientific introduction to circadian rhythms
The book is great. It is written for educated lay readers (such as college students) and may not please readers looking for a self-help type of book, but it is as readable as a fully-referenced book can be. It thoroughly covers the science of circadian rhythms. By the way, as the author points out in his comment on this blog, Amazon is mixing the comments about the first and second editions. The comment that "J. Barr" makes about the lack of a glossary refers to the first edition; the second edition has a full dictionary that includes information on etymology and pronunciation! This book (second edition) is my first choice as a thorough scientific introduction to circadian rhythms.

Implied Contract Second Revised Edition by Mike Smitley - Outstanding

In the world of law enforcement, there are few things more complicated and exasperating than the investigation of a serial murder. Multiple victims and multiple crime scenes require extra attention and extraordinary analytical skills.

The rare instance of a sniper serial killer is perhaps the most challenging investigation of all. With little evidence and lots of danger, a high-powered rifle in the hands of an expert marksman represents an investigators worst nightmare. That nightmare has come true for the characters in Implied Contract.

Outstanding
I am a retired federal agent, and current part-time police officer. This thriller, written by a former police chief, will keep you riveted to your chair. The expertise of the author, from his years in law enforcement, really added to the book. Even as a long-time police officer, the identities of the perps involved in the tale were skillfully hidden from me by the author, until he was ready for them to be revealed.

Black Jack by Max Brand - Enjoyable Yarn

excerpt from CHAPTER 1:
It was characteristic of the two that when the uproar broke out Vance Cornish raised his eyes, but went on lighting his pipe. Then his sister Elizabeth ran to the window with a swish of skirts around her long legs. After the first shot there was a lull. The little cattle town was as peaceful as ever with its storm-shaken houses staggering away down the street.

A boy was stirring up the dust of the street, enjoying its heat with his bare toes, and the same old man was bunched in his chair in front of the store. During the two days Elizabeth had been in town on her cattle- buying trip, she had never see him alter his position. But she was accustomed to the West, and this advent of sleep in the town did not satisfy her. A drowsy town, like a drowsy-looking cow-puncher, might be capable of unexpected things.

Vance, she said, theres trouble starting.

Somebody shooting at a target, he answered.

As if to mock him, he had no sooner spoken than a dozen voices yelled down the street in a wailing chorus cut short by the rapid chattering of revolvers. Vance ran to the window. Just below the hotel the street made an elbow-turn for no particular reason except that the original cattle- trail had made exactly the same turn before Garrison City was built. Toward the corner ran the hubbub at the pace of a running horse. Shouts, shrill, trailing curses, and the muffled beat of hoofs in the dust. A rider plunged into view now, his horse leaning far in to take the sharp angle, and the dust skidding out and away from his sliding hoofs. The rider gave easily and gracefully to the wrench of his mount.

And he seemed to have a perfect trust in his horse, for he rode with the reins hanging over the horns of his saddle. His hands were occupied by a pair of revolvers, and he was turned in the saddle.

The head of the pursuing crowd lurched around the elbow-turn; fire spat twice from the mouth of each gun. Two men dropped, one rolling over and over in the dust, and the other sitting down and clasping his leg in a ludicrous fashion. But the crowd was checked and fell back.

By this time the racing horse of the fugitive had carried him close to the hotel, and now he faced the front, a handsome fellow with long black hair blowing about his face. He wore a black silk shirt which accentuated the pallor of his face and the flaring crimson of his bandanna. And he laughed joyously, and the watchers from the hotel window heard him call: Go it, Mary. Feed em dust, girl!

The pursuers had apparently realized that it was useless to chase. Another gust of revolver shots barked from the turning of the street, and among them a different and more sinister sound like the striking of two great hammers face on face, so that there was a cold ring of metal after the explosion--at least one man had brought a rifle to bear. Now, as the wild rider darted past the hotel, his hat was jerked from his head by an invisible hand. He whirled again in the saddle and his guns raised. As he turned, Elizabeth Cornish saw something glint across the street. It was the gleam of light on the barrel of a rifle that was thrust out through the window of the store.

Enjoyable Yarn
I like Max Brand's stories over most other Western writers because he sidesteps page after page of monotonous action and substitutes the inner thoughts and emotions of his characters. As we get to know them we start to worry over their fate. If that is the kind of story you like, then, you are in luck here.

Great explanation of Whidbey concepts w/lots of code!
ASP.NET 2.0 Revealed
By Patrick Lorenz
Published by APress
...

This book is much more demonstrative and visual than some of the other titles currently on the market, making it the ultimate complement for books like "A First Look at ASP.NET v 2.0". Overall, the book's tone is very educational but not intimidating, complex but not complicated, making for a very friendly atmosphere that makes it quite easy to read.

The book tackles some of the more technical topics involved with developing and administering ASP.NET web sites, so it's an effective tool in lightly previewing what's coming on the horizon for us, as well as giving you the in-depth answers to allow you to start planning to solve problems and work more efficiently.

In each of the title's 13 hearty chapters, there's great examples that accompany most, if not all of the concepts presented. So, you don't get an empty, lost feeling after being drawn-into an idea - it's succeeded with a relevant, working C# example.

The book is definitely written for the web developer already primed with experience in ASP.NET 1.x, so familiarity with the concepts of Microsoft web development is a must. But assuming that, you'll be very pleased.

Specifically, there are several areas in this book I found to be outstanding. These include a fantastic introduction to generics, iterators, anonymous methods and other new features of both C# and Visual Basic .NET. Also, there's a great description of using the ObjectDataSource control for binding business objects to data controls, and an equally nice discussion of the Site Counter API and keeping tabs on the user currently on one's site. The book also has a good chunk of information about the improvements to working with dynamic imaging, and about the easy by which you can create and control client-side script.

Additionally, there's a great preview of the Whidbey version of Visual Studio .NET's features specifically for web developers. Provides constant tips and comments about what features are likely to be changed by the Whidbey Beta.

The sole bit of criticism I would have it that, the chapter on Web Parts chapter was interesting, but largely took from the documentation and samples you can find on MSDN and in the .NET Framework documentation.

But outside of that, the positive far outweigh the negatives, and if you're on the hunt for anything and everything you can get your hands on about the next big thing in web development, get your hands on this book today.

The absolute best of Mark Twain?
No. Nothing by Mark Twain can qualify as his 'best'. The breadth of his writing career cuts too wide a swath for such a statement. However, The American Claimant, obscure though it is, is certainly among his best.

The American Claimant is about Americans, the way they view themselves, the way they are viewed by others through the eyes of a British nobleman. Even though a century has passed since the book was written, most of the acute observations are as true today as when it was written.

A family of Americans descended from an eldest son of a British Earl, Lord Rossmore, has been claiming the title for many generations. The actual young Earl, filled with idealism, decides to abdicate, to change places with the American claimant. He travels to the US with the intention of contacting Colonel Mulberry Sellers, the claimant, to exchange places. Sellers is an American dreamer, always down on his luck, an inventor, a philanthropist of sorts.

Through a series of Keystone Kops misfortunes the Earl loses his letters of credit, assumes the clothing of bank robber from the west, takes up life in a boarding house of workmen, determined to make a life on his own and abandon the wealth of his past.

This is the setting for The American Claimant. The Earl discovers the American dream isn't quite as it is cracked up to be, discovers his taste for the common man is far less palatable in close proximity. Every attempt to find employment is thwarted until he discovers himself to be a worthy hack as an artist.

Fate takes a hand in the lives of the young Earl and the heir of the claimant, leading to a zesty, if predictable wrap-up.

As with every book by Mark Twain, this one is fun. It is astute. It is thought provoking. It is well written, the characters sympathetic and mostly believable, the plot, circuitous in the best Mark Twain tradition. It also contains an element of subtle wisdom and tongue-in-cheek observation more finely honed than in many of the earlier writings.

The author declared in the beginning that this would be a story without weather. He held to his promise, but in the end provided weather for the story in an appendix, for those who must have it.

I don't know why this book has fallen by the wayside. It shouldn't have done so.

I recommend it for any reader, but especially for American ones.

Chrysalis of Fire by Peter Cholewinski - Excellent military/space opera hybrid

Two centuries in the future, a military power called the Nexus controls a war-ravaged Earth. Science is treason, and the scientists and engineers (the Galileans) are exiled to harsh off-world settlements.

Commander Aaron Drake thrived in the battle-hardened world of the Nexus - despite his scientific background - until the Nexus ordered him to destroy a mysterious probe that might represent first contact with aliens.

Caught between ruthless Nexus agents and dangerous Galilean raiders, the probe leads Drake from a battle on the pirate settlement of Vesta to the Galileans base on Ganymede, where he learns the truth about the Nexus, the Galileans, and his own past.

But Drakes battle for survival really begins when the Nexus and Galileans are forced to work together after decades of enmity. As the Nexus and Galileans race to a final showdown with each other - and a power that could destroy humanity - Drake realizes he has to choose whether he is a man of war or science.

Excellent military/space opera hybrid
This is my first review on amazon.com, mainly to disagree with Asril's review of 'Chrysalis of Fire.' I LOVED this book. Asril says they've read it, but they most definitely have not since several things in their review are factually incorrect. To me, Asril sounds interested only in slamming this author and/or independent authors across the board.

As someone who reads a lot of military sci-fi, I found CoF very rewarding. It's military sci-fi: lots of action and battles and fast paced stuff. But there's great character development too, which some books in the genre can lack. This is most true for the main character, Commander Aaron Drake. He starts off with a kind of 'robocop' mentality but gradually frees himself to think freely again. There are lots of tough personal situations, but Drake stays hard as nails while fighting villians.

It takes place in the future when humans are split between those who outlaw science (the Nexus who control Earth) and the Galileans who embrace science. When a probe that is the first contact from an alien race enters the solar system, the cold war between these two sides heats up. The Nexus wants to destroy the probe and the Galileans want to contact the aliens. Drake, who is a Commander with the Nexus as well as a scientist in background, ends up caught in the middle. That's about all I can say without giving away too much but the plot goes way beyond just this!

The main reason CoF was such a good read - aside from the awesome plot - was the way most chapters end with a cliffhanger. Even when I wanted to stop, I had a hard time doing so because there were multiple major twists along the way. I highly recommend this book to anyone into military sci-fi. Space opera junkies will love it too.

Bunner Sisters by Edith Wharton - Wharton writes like no other I have read!

In the days when New Yorks traffic moved at the pace of the drooping horse-car, when society applauded Christine Nilsson at the Academy of Music and basked in the sunsets of the Hudson River School on the walls of the National Academy of Design, an inconspicuous shop with a single show-window was intimately and favourably known to the feminine population of the quarter bordering on Stuyvesant Square.

Wharton writes like no other I have read!
It was the play version of Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome that pushed me to read more of her wonderful books. What has intrigued me is her writing style. She will go for pages without much happening, but you learn an awful lot in those few pages.

Edith Wharton's Bunner Sisters takes place in New York, 1916 where hard times have fallen upon two sisters who run a shabby little dressmaker's shop adjacent to their dwelling. The elder sister, Ann Eliza, and her younger sister Evelina have encountered a sickly, but educated clockmaker who sells her a clock. At first, knowledge of his personality and previous lifestyle are unknown to the sisters, but they slowly befriend the lonely man and his visits to the home are frequent thoughout the next few months. He becomes a part of their lives and his existence is with some mystery. His interest to one of the sisters moves the story in another direction and into another phase of their lives.

The writing style of Wharton is unlike others, as she uses words that not only describe a scene in an era or condition, but with descriptive phrases that depict feelings, moods, attitudes, and mystery. She has given the reader just enough information about the man to carry the story forward without revealing too much, to know something is coming up. The air of mysterious is always around as we learn about the old man, his relationship with the sisters and the confidence they have in him. You will learn the symbolic references to time, age and transition, as the clock tic tocks and winds.

This is a wonderful read on the socio-economic hard times during the era, the smaller run dressmaking industry, and mostly, the relationships between three people and the care between two sisters. Bunner Sisters is a novelette. Like any other Wharton short novel, this one is filled with mysterious interest! .....Rizzo

Liza of Lambeth by W. Somerset Maugham - Interesting, sad little tale

It was the first Saturday afternoon in August; it had been broiling hot all day, with a cloudless sky, and the sun had been beating down on the houses, so that the top rooms were like ovens; but now with the approach of evening it was cooler, and everyone in Vere Street was out of doors.

Interesting, sad little tale
I've read several books since reading Liza of Lambeth, yet Liza continues to come to mind. Her need for attention, naivete, search for affection - made me want to reach out to her. Her story could have gone in so many other directions.

I will definitely have to try more Maugham.

Iterating Infusion: Clearer Views of Objects, Classes, and Systems by Greg Anthony - Surprisingly insightful

Iterating Infusion: Clearer Views of Objects, Classes, and Systems is a one-of-a-kind book, not dependent on any single technology. Rather, it provides a way to integrate the most efficient techniques from a variety of programming methods, in a manner that makes designing and programming software look easy.

Iterating Infusion presents comprehensive tools for you to best manage and work with object orientation. These include simplified fundamental concepts, popular language comparisons, advanced designing strategies, a broad usage progression, thorough design notations (interaction algebra), and data-oriented (fundamentally-OO) languages.

Readers have been confirming that, compared to books on just low-level details, Iterating Infusion presents cohesive insights that allow you to solve more problems with the same effort in more key places.

Surprisingly insightful
It's pretty easy to dismiss a book like this off the top as rehash or insignificant, but some of it you know, and a lot of it you don't. Some really important things seem so obvious after you read them, but you never would have thought of them yourself. I agree with the reviewer who said that he always THOUGHT that he was doing a good job. I can see that I've been missing a lot of things, and I'm going to recommend II to my teammates.

It doesn't make developing a whole system SIMPLE, and it doesn't say that it will. It just makes everything easier. It's like it says here's how to make everything as un-difficult as possible. And, I don't know how exactly, but it really does give you a strong feeling of comfort and power, and this builds throughout the book. Maybe because it just puts together all of the fragments you've gathered here and there with some unique "glue".

***
As for the person who asserted that the other reviews are not real, based on the idea that they're on other sites with the same dates under different names, that person's observation skills are dismal. The reviews are on other sites, but they're definitely the same name for the corresponding review, and they had different dates. A person who would get that easily confused by such a simple set of conditions is probably a woefully inadequate developer. What's more, that person didn't even read the book, because the reviews are accurate. Maybe the people just wanted to spread the word. Since I have the idea, I'm going to copy and paste my review to another site right now.

Engineering of Mind: An Introduction to the Science of Intelligent Systems by Alexander M. Meystel - Octavian's review

Presenting a reference model architecture for the design of intelligent systems
Engineering of Mind presents the foundations for a computational theory of intelligence. It discusses the main streams of investigation that will eventually converge in a scientific theory of mind and proposes an avenue of research that might best lead to the development of truly intelligent systems.
This book presents a model of the brain as a hierarchy of massive parallel computational modules and data structures interconnected by information pathways. Using this as the basic model on which intelligent systems should be based, the authors propose a reference model architecture that accommodates concepts from artificial intelligence, control theory, image understanding, signal processing, and decision theory. Algorithms, procedures, and data embedded within this architecture would enable the analysis of situations, the formulation of plans, the choice of behaviors, and the computation of uncertainties. The computational power to implement the model can be achieved in practical systems in the foreseeable future through hierarchical and parallel distribution of computational tasks.
The authors reference model architecture is expressed in terms of the Real-time Control System (RCS) that has been developed primarily at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Suitable for engineers, computer scientists, researchers, and students, Engineering of Mind blends current theory and practice to achieve a coherent model for the design of intelligent systems.

Octavian's review
Very interesting topic. They provided a very useful view specially for those who are interested in revealing the mind mechanisms and implementing them. It's a very good book for students and PhD-s also.

This is one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. Can't wait to read about the rest of the family. Daks was a great character and his first time with Leonie was a riot. Truly an example of the family that slays together, stays together.

Worthy of space on my Kindle.
