Commander Aaron Drake thrived in the battle-hardened world of the Nexus - despite his scientific background - until the Nexus ordered him to destroy a mysterious probe that might represent first contact with aliens.
Caught between ruthless Nexus agents and dangerous Galilean raiders, the probe leads Drake from a battle on the pirate settlement of Vesta to the Galileans base on Ganymede, where he learns the truth about the Nexus, the Galileans, and his own past.
But Drakes battle for survival really begins when the Nexus and Galileans are forced to work together after decades of enmity. As the Nexus and Galileans race to a final showdown with each other - and a power that could destroy humanity - Drake realizes he has to choose whether he is a man of war or science.
Excellent military/space opera hybrid
This is my first review on amazon.com, mainly to disagree with Asril's review of 'Chrysalis of Fire.' I LOVED this book. Asril says they've read it, but they most definitely have not since several things in their review are factually incorrect. To me, Asril sounds interested only in slamming this author and/or independent authors across the board.
As someone who reads a lot of military sci-fi, I found CoF very rewarding. It's military sci-fi: lots of action and battles and fast paced stuff. But there's great character development too, which some books in the genre can lack. This is most true for the main character, Commander Aaron Drake. He starts off with a kind of 'robocop' mentality but gradually frees himself to think freely again. There are lots of tough personal situations, but Drake stays hard as nails while fighting villians.
It takes place in the future when humans are split between those who outlaw science (the Nexus who control Earth) and the Galileans who embrace science. When a probe that is the first contact from an alien race enters the solar system, the cold war between these two sides heats up. The Nexus wants to destroy the probe and the Galileans want to contact the aliens. Drake, who is a Commander with the Nexus as well as a scientist in background, ends up caught in the middle. That's about all I can say without giving away too much but the plot goes way beyond just this!
The main reason CoF was such a good read - aside from the awesome plot - was the way most chapters end with a cliffhanger. Even when I wanted to stop, I had a hard time doing so because there were multiple major twists along the way. I highly recommend this book to anyone into military sci-fi. Space opera junkies will love it too.
