THE PROBLEMS OF PHILOSOPHY (UPDATE w/LINKED TOC) by Bertrand Russell - A very interesting book

Is there any knowledge in the world which is so certain that no reasonable man could doubt it? Philosophy is the attempt to answer such ultimate questions, not carelessly and dogmatically, as we might deal with them in ordinary life, but critically, after analysing how and why the questions arise and clarifying the assumptions and concepts on which they are based. This classic work, first published in 1912, has never been supplanted as an approachable introduction to the theory of philosophical enquiry. It gives Russells views on such subjects as the distinction between appearance and reality, the existence and nature of matter, idealism, knowledge by acquaintance and by description, induction, and the limits and value of philosophical knowledge. This edition includes an introduction by John Skorupski contextualizing Russells work, and a guide to further reading.

A very interesting book
Bertrand Russell brings the topic of philosophy right down to earth, explaining it in a way that the average person can understand. The last chapter, "The value of Philosophy" is written with beautiful style and is an enjoyment to read. The quote below, taken from a chapter in the book, provides just one example:

"Philosophy, though unable to tell us with certainty what is the true answer to the doubts which it raises, is able to suggest many possibilities which enlarge our thoughts and free them from the tyranny of custom. Thus, while diminishing our feeling of certainty as to what things are, it greatly increases our knowledge as to what the may be; it removes the somewhat arrogant dogmatism of those who have never traveled into the region of liberating doubt, and it keeps alive our sense of wonder by showing familiar things in an unfamiliar aspect."

This book book has made me much more interested in philosophy than I previously was. If you are even remotely interested in the subject, I recommend that you read this book.
