into my heart and forgive me of all of my sins." This prayer is the
prayer all of us New Christians were told to say once we were ready
to give ourselves over to God. We came into the church, and during
the Benediction (end of church for all of you really New Christians)
we answered the call to give ourselves over to Christ. We walked
down that long aisle to the front of the whole entire church, tears
flowing, and body bent and beaten by the world. We walked down that
aisle to Salvation! Everyone in the church cried out "Thank you
Jesus!" The pastor greeted us at the end of that long walk with open
arms. Oh what a glorious occasion! He put his hands on our head,
prayed a magnificent prayer, I mean a prayer so powerful he almost
knocked us down with the thrust of his hand! "Oh, this must be the
Power of the Holy Ghost they keep talking about!" Now all we needed
to do was ask Jesus to be our personal Lord and Savior. The pastor
even gave us the words to say. And we did as we were guided, for
after all, this will get us to God!! Then after all of the cheers and
Hallelujahs, we were introduced to the church as a new member and
a New Christian. We are sat down and given a list of all the church
committees, and all of the organizations (that never have enough
people to run it) and encouraged to join at least one. And if we have any other questions, the pastor would be in his office Tuesdays and
Fridays between 10 am and 2 pm. Then we were sent on our way,
back into the world from which we came.
So we go on our way. Finally, we asked Jesus into our hearts and
now we are saved! All of our sins are forgiven! We are New
Christians! But wait a minute I don't feel any different. I don't look
any different. Aren't there some rules or something I need to follow?
Can I still go to the bar? NOW WHAT?
Wonderful Book for Newer and Older Christians!
"Now What?" is a book directed mainly towards steering newer Christians in the right direction. While it gives great Bible verse recommendations, it also gives the "newly-convicted" advice on how to deal with their new-found feelings and their new friends in the congregation (of any denomination). The book lets you know what you should look out for and what you should look into. Ernestine Burke writes her text in an easy-to-read, conversational manner (especially for the younger crowd).
I also recommend this book for Christians who have been in the church for awhile. For this group of people, it gives you insight on how newer and younger Christians in your church may be feeling and will shine a different light on how to deal with and accept them.
Ms. Burke also tells of her own life struggles of being a depressed, single mother---whose life is changed by the re-discovery of Christ and the church-family. Read it today!
