Kin by Christi Stewart-Brown - This is what my 13-year-old wrote in his book report:

A hilarious adventure story for young adults and grown-ups alike.
When 13-year-old Jude accidentally finds his birth certificate in his mothers underwear drawer, his world is turned upside down. He knew he was adopted, but the birth certificate reveals something he could never have imagined in his wildest dreams. Jude has a blood family nearby---and not just a blood family, a blood relative who is as close as close can get.
The document leads to a journey back in time, or so it seems to pampered, quirky Jude. The kin he has never met reside in the wilds of Appalachia, living off the land, barely subsisting.
Find out what happens when a teen who is used to electronics, computers, supermarkets, plumbing, and instant gratification in general is thrust into a community that is virtually a hundred years in the past.

This is what my 13-year-old wrote in his book report:
"The only book I can compare it to is The Outsiders, and I like Kin more."
Very few books have caught his attention, but he devoured Kin in a week.
