Winters Bone: A Novel by Daniel Woodrell - Wow, just Wow...

Ree Dollys father has skipped bail on charges that he ran a crystal meth lab, and the Dollys will lose their house if he doesnt show up for his next court date. With two young brothers depending on her, 16-year-old Ree knows she has to bring her father back, dead or alive. Living in the harsh poverty of the Ozarks, Ree learns quickly that asking questions of the rough Dolly clan can be a fatal mistake. But, as an unsettling revelation lurks, Ree discovers unforeseen depths in herself and in a family network that protects its own at any cost.

Wow, just Wow...
This story jerks and unsettles "mainstream" America, reminding that there is yet another subculture in our own back yard. I work in an area not unlike the Dollys' mountains, only this one is in the deep Florida south. Same drug problems, same extended families, same trouble in poverty...amazing how a "rich" American county can ignore "Appalachia" no matter where it is. This is a MUST READ book, and I recommend it to high school and college readers with caveats for language and violence. Oh, the new cover is misleading - did the illustrator read the first chapter? The original cover of stark, bleak winter willows - that's the one. Enjoy.
